Aperitivo is a cultural custom born in the northern cities of Italy. Traditionally taking place in the hours before an evening meal, it involves the leisurely consumption of a bitter alcoholic drink, or two, accompanied by a small offering of food–ranging from a simple bowl of olives to freshly baked pizzette. Originally, the ritual was designed to simply stimulate the appetite, but over time it has evolved and become an occasion unto itself–you could even say–an art form. It is a celebration of culture, cuisine, and most importantly, bringing people together.
Within the pages of this book, we capture the spirit of aperitivo through playful design inspired by vintage menus and intimate photography of the places that have preserved and cultivated this tradition, alongside carefully curated recipes for the dishes and drinks that comprise it.
The design is a marriage of the bold and the finely detailed. The cover draws inspiration from Italian renaissance fabrics with contemporary playful typography taking centre stage.
